Who are We?

The Philosophy of this research, according to my understanding, is that “man is an animal but culture and environment influence him to be a social human being”. Human beings at birth are not aware of their existence nor aware of what they are in this world. However, people around them, the environment, and culture affects the humanities to follow a a pattern that distinct and describe ways to live and think. Man decided to join the society to learn and share a common culture, and follow the norms of the society where he belongs.
Culture really affects one's personality, that culture produces types of personality that is missing in other culture. Filipinos are stereotypical, that judge a group according to what they saw.

The End Justify the Means

The Philosophy of this research, according to my understanding, is that “man is an animal but culture and environment influence him to be a social human being”. Human beings at birth are not aware of their existence nor aware of what they are in this world. However, people around them, the environment, and culture affects the humanities to follow a a pattern that distinct and describe ways to live and think. Man decided to join the society to learn and share a common culture, and follow the norms of the society where he belongs.
Culture really affects one's personality, that culture produces types of personality that is missing in other culture. Filipinos are stereotypical, that judge a group according to what they saw.
Each society has its own culture. UPMindanao culture is merely different from any other schools and universities in Mindanao because UPMin students are all intelligent and they are open to share and accept others' culture. UPMin students can interact with each other easily because they share a common culture and common knowledge about the culture they shared. The students can be stereotyped as intelligent but not as activists. The students are just doing what they think is right for the whole humanities.
Mindanao culture reflects the culture in UPMindanao simply because UPMindanao is in Mindanao and most of the students are native in Mindanao.

My Goals in Life

The aim of this research is to find out the effect of culture in the personality and behavior of the students. In this manner, this can help us in understanding an individual's personality and that there are reasons why such being possess this kind of behavior. This research wants to know if culture also affects the relationship of two or more individuals who came from different culture and how they interact with each other. This is important in making relationship with people around us by making a positive impression to others so that they are more interested in knowing us deeper and so that we are aware of what do we have to change in our behavior. The third goal of this research is to observe how individuals adapt a culture new to them. This is very significant in socialization with others.
This research will also investigate the true culture in the University of the Philippines Mindanao and why it is unique from other universities in Mindanao. By this investigation, we may able to differentiate our culture from other institutions. Another one is to determine the norms of the university which UPMindanao students followed. Norms are what a group of people consider as normal and correct behavior. This will help us in order for us to understand the way a group of people behaved. There is a mutual understanding when you say norms because it is just like an agreement of the majority that a behavior is normal and moral for them. We will also find out how Upmin students describe themselves as one, as well as the non-UP students. Some of the non-UP students say that UP students are all intelligent, which is true to all, and that UP students are activists, which is a fallacy. This will help us in judging your own as part of the society and to prove that you belong to a social group.
Since we are talking about UPMindanao and its culture, this research will also reflect the culture of Mindanao. Mindanao culture will reflect in this research for the reason that the locale, where the research is done and will be doing, the UPMindano, is in Mindanao. This will be classified at the end of the research.

The Culture I've Known

The study of culture and personality searches to comprehend the growth and development of physical or social identity as it connects to the bordering social environment1. Culture is defined as the storage of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meaning, possessions obtained by a large group of people( Barone, 1995:118). Culture and personality have relations with each other, thus, culture affects the personality of an individual. Personality is a product of culture from which an individual can be identified through the society they belong. Personality, however, is defined as the consistent pattern emerged from a prevailing set of inner force(Crapo, 1990:240). Every people has his/her own and unique personality because of their cultural differences activated in childhood. This also applies to some situations in which most of us are raised. Different culture produces different personality that is absent from other culture. That is why each individual is unique from the other.

Wala lang

1. Are personality traits useful in describing or understanding persons and their behavior in all cultures?
2. Do persons in different cultures describe each other in terms of similar or comparable traits?
3. How well do the trait dimensions assessed by imported personality inventories replicate or function across cultures?
4. How culture-specific are the trait dimensions assessed by indigenous personality inventories?
5. Do indigenous personality measures outperform or provide additional prediction of behavior beyond that provided by imported measures?
6. Are particular traits expressed or manifested in a similar manner in all cultures?
7. Can cultural differences in the level of particular personality traits be inferred from comparisons of average scores on personality measures across cultures?
8. Are subgroup differences in personality traits (e.g., gender differences) the same in all cultures?
9. Do persons in different cultures vary in their beliefs about the extent to which behavior is determined by traits versus contextual factors?
10. Are the biological or socio-cultural bases of personality traits the same in different cultures?

culture and personality

The study of culture and personality seeks to understand the growth and development of personal or social identity as it relates to the surrounding social environment (Barnouw 1963:5). In other words, through the examination of individual personalities, broader correlations and generalizations can be made about the specific culture of those members. This has led to examinations of national character, modal personality types and configurations of personality.

The theory of Culture and Personality was based on Boas’ cultural relativism and Freud’s psychoanalysis about early childhood. If we premise that all humans are hereditarily equal, why are people so unique from society to society? The theoretical school answered this question by using Freud’s psychoanalysis: the differences between people in various societies usually stem from cultural differences installed in childhood. In other words, the foundations of personality development are set in early childhood according to each society’s unique cultural traits. Based on this basis, the theoretical school of Culture and Personality researched childrearing in different societies and compared the results cross-culturally. They described distinctive characteristics of people in certain cultures and attributed these unique traits to the different methods of childrearing. The aim of this comparison was to show the correlation between childrearing practices and adult personality types.
